Laurie Dempsey has been playing since 8 years of age, beginning violin lessons in Chester where he was born. At 16 he was awarded a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester as a joint violinist/violist where he studied with the renowned Prof. Mark Knight before gaining a scholarship to study viola at the RNCM. Here, he continued his studies with Mark Knight during his undergraduate degree and completed his postgraduate studies with Susie Mészáros of the Chillingirian Quartet.
During his time at college Laurie took masterclasses with the likes of Nobuko Imai, Maxim Rysanov, Thomas Reibl and Garth Knox. He was also invited to feature as a soloist in RNCM’s contemporary music festival, performed Colin Matthew’s second quartet at the Wigmore Hall and made several trips to Montepulciano, Italy to perform in the Cantiere Internatzionale D'arte Festival. He has also taken further instruction with Peter Cropper and studied with the quartet under Robin Ireland, James Boyd, Oliver Wille and Christoph Richter to name a few. Since leaving college Laurie has played with many orchestras throughout the country including Manchester Camerata and last year appeared as a Soloist for Musica Nova. Laurie also spends time teaching, recording, composing, arranging and performing in various ensembles throughout the North West.
